Licensing
Here’s the interesting thing about photography, licensing and copyrights. Photographs are automatically copyrighted with exclusive rights as soon as they are created. The copyright is in effect for the photographer’s entire life plus 70 years. The copyright pertains to the image wherever it exists including the photographer’s hard drive, and online portfolio website, or a post on your Instagram feed etc. This establishes ownership according to the Copyright Law of the United States of America.

New ideas are protected specifically as stated by Article I, Section 8, Clause 8: [The Congress shall have Power . . . ] To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.
