Wakefield MA

Wakefield is home to Lake Qaunnapowitt, named after Quonopohit, the Naumkeag Native American man who signed a deed in 1686 that lead to Wakefield becoming a town, although it wasn't incorporated as a town until 1812,. Along the way it had different names including "Redding" and "South Reading," before becoming "Wakefield" on July 4, 1868. The name comes from Cyrus Wakefield, a major employer in the rattan industry. Wakefield had donated land and money that built the town hall at the time.
