This shoot had everything going against it. Early on a February morning I was up with the birds. The temperature was freezing cold at 15F /-9C. We are talking frostbite cold. Sleeping late almost won the battle. By 600 AM I was on the way to Cape Ann.
The ride to Rockport and Gloucester was quick. Being a Sunday and so cold no one had ventured out. In the sun it wanted to be warm, and the lighting looked warm, but it wasn't. However, there were only a handful of people out. The beach walkers and their dogs, the sea gulls, and one other guy shooting photos at Motif#1.
Yet we had a super photo opportunity. As mentioned, the lighting was great. The early morning sun created that warm feeling. The sunlight’s hard angles and reddish color are only there during the "Golden Hour" which is an hour after sunrise. The tide was coming in but even with the water ripples there was stillness. And to be at a couple of Cape Ann's most popular tourist spots, Rockport's Bearskin Neck and Gloucester's Good Harbor Beach, without the tourists was priceless.
Sometimes we have to make things happen in life. It turned out to be a great morning for photography. Hard to believe I could barely hold the camera. Getting up early in the freezing cold has been super productive for me this winter.
