What a day at Fisherman's Wharf in San Franciso CA. Although I shot the photo in July 2010, looking at the proof set it feels like yesterday. The black background and white foreground feel like a basic figure ground, but the Sea Lions add life. We love the shot.
There is a group of resident Sea Lions who typically spend most of the year at the wharf. Others come and go with the population growing and shrinking based on the local food supply. A day in the life of a Sea Lion is to hunt for their favorite meal with a menu consisting of squid, anchovies, mackerel, rockfish, and sardines. Both the San Franciso and the Monterey Bay areas are rich feeding grounds and only 120 miles apart.
What a life. The 1966 hit by Ray Davies and the Kinks complained about the high price of taxes with one line saying they could not afford to sail on their yacht. These guys seem to be doing fine with their dinghies.
