"A Giant in Black and White"

On some shots color does a great job at capturing reality.  But on others, Black and White changes the

image and better tells the story.  The Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland is a super example of the dilemma.  This image shows many of nature’s forces, but the power of nature gets lost in the

flatness.  In color it’s just a snapshot, but in Black and White the image becomes a photograph. A point of interest I learned in my research – the Giants Causeway is the location used for the cover art on Led Zeppelin’s House of the Holy.

The photo itself captures the ocean’s calm, the rock formations and the overhead storm clouds that are about to rain, but there’s not enough life in it.  Switching to Black and White lets the tones, textures and shapes work so the eye sees the contrast and the image creates the feeling or mood.  Although Ireland is the Emerald Island, black and white does a great job of illustrating the climate and roughness of the North Atlantic coast.

The " A Giant in Black and White" is part of our Framed Collection on the Piacere Website. The link will take you there
