No Anchovies please

Updated: Jan 1

No Anchovies Please is a song by The J Giles Band in 1980 on the album Love Stinks. Its a crazy song about a woman who is kidnapped and taken to a foreign speaking country after eating anchovies. It starts with a salad, a can of anchovies and a small note at the bottom of the can with a telephone number. It’s a crazy song the ends saying - Next time you place your order don't forget to say, "No anchovies please".

Fast forward and we're up early one morning in Sorrento but not before the fisherman. The fisherman had already been out and were circling around their nets as they brought them in. You can see the sea birds with them looking for a freebie.

Sorrento is a quaint fishing town facing the Bay of Naples with views of both Capri and Mt Vesuvius.  To some Sorrento is part of the Amalfi Coast but it’s not.  Sorrento is on the Sorrentine Peninsula and faces North towards the Bay of Naples.  Amalfi on the other hand faces south into the Gulf of Salerno.

The most common catch is Anchovies. Anchovies, although too salty for some are considered a superfood and are rich in energy producing B vitamins niacin, riboflavin and vitamin B-12. They are used often in Italy as the base for tomato and other sauces. More than likely, they go unnoticed as the small fish essentially melt when cooked and are without substance or texture.

Thats a big contribution from a little salty fish. What a story from an early morning photo off the hotel balcony. The photo captures the sereneness of what is no doubt a daily ritual. Pescato del giorno.
