Envisioning a photo with sunlight contrasting shadows the question comes up - how to use the camera to create the image. In this case, thinking a larger F-Stop will let in more light both opponents the highlight and flatten the depth of field. Keep the inverse relationship in mind where the smaller number is the larger F-Stop. In other words, the F4 used in this image lets in more light than F16.
It's easy to see the focal point in the center of the image. The outer parameters are out of focus, almost creating a vignette effect. Contrast and highlight adjustments to deepen the shadows and open the highlight were the only editing. For the purist this editing is little different than aggressively agitating a film canister when developing a roll of black and white film to add contrast.
You can find good shots anywhere. No travel was needed on this one as it’s right in my driveway.
