The Green Mountain State and More

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Vermont is known for many things starting with Maple Syrup, beautiful scenery, and great skiing. The ride on Route 100 is one of the most scenic fall foliage rides in the US. In addition, Vermont has a quaintness to it with covered bridges, farms, and water - lots of water. The Middlebury area is known for waterfalls and rivers and then there's Lake Champlain.

But Vermont is part of early American history. Not one of the 13 colonies because of land issues with New York, Vermont became the 14th state. During the American Revolution in 1775 revolutionary Americans captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British helping to break the siege of Boston. The fort is located less than 100 miles for the Vermont border on the New York side of Lake Champlain where it and Lake George almost touch. Ticonderoga is an Iroquois word meaning "between two waters," or "where the waters meet” and indicative of its strategic location.

Its early American history includes innovation, an example being in the early to mid-1800’s John Deere who was born in Rutland Vermont and got his start as a blacksmith in the town of Middlebury. That’s the same John Deere who built the world’s first Moldboard Plow in 1837 and whose company today builds tractors, farm equipment and construction equipment. Used for tilling soil, the Moldboard Plow is just being phased out this year - 2023.

Going back to Ticonderoga, who doesn’t remember being told they needed No2 and No4 Ticonderoga Pencils at school? Why Ticonderoga Pencils - they have the reputation of staying sharp without breaking, giving them the longest staying power for writing. Apparently, they have the best erasers too. Sorry to say the pencils are no longer are Made in USA.

Vermont is the second smallest state in terms of population with about 650.000 residents. Its three largest industries are tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. Agriculture, in particular dairy farming, is everywhere in Vermont. Name brands are Cabots Cheese and Ben and Jerries Ice Cream. Yum.
