Greetings!! We are just back from a 3-week trip to Ireland, Northern Ireland and England. We have thousands of new images using both a Canon R8 and I-Phone. Here’s the first image taken in the tunnel connecting the old Crumlin Road Gaol Prison to the Crumlin Road Courthouse. It’s a low light situation shot with the R8 at ISO 200. F/4 and 1 second. Despite the long exposure. the Canon lens with Image Stabilization helps the base image, in this case the tunnel, stay in focus while the slow shutter captures more blur than figure creating a feeling of motion.
The effect adds a spookiness to the image of the happenings between the prison and courthouse. The Crumlin Prison operated for about 150 years, closing in 1996. In its time the prison housed the likes of murders, suffragettes and both loyalist and republican prisoners. Overall, about 17 people were executed. Some of the most famous prisoners were during the so-called Troubles period including Eamon de Velera, Martin McGuinness, Michael Stone and Bobby Sands.
The Troubles can be traced back hundreds of years but Ireland refers to the Troubles as the time between the late 1960’s and the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Today Northern Ireland still self-segregates and though it’s been over 20 years, Ireland is still waiting for the religious division to “breed” itself out of Ireland. By the way the image is my wife Ann who was equally fascinated and a few steps ahead of me checking out the tunnel.
Our goal is to use photographic images to convey a feeling and message about our subject. Taking a Black Cab ride in Belfast adds a passionate history lesson and combining our photos with research we hope the stories are equally fascinating to you. Keep an eye open and check our website at https://www.piacere.site/. We have a lot of photos to review and work in post-production. There’s more to come.
