What to see in Capri?

Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Capri is 34 km (21.12 miles) from Mt Vesuvius, an active volcano in Italy last erupting March 1944. The Campi Flegrei volcano, near Naples, is 54 km (33.5 miles) though last erupted in 1538. What’s interesting about Capri as well as the Sorrentine Peninsula is both are made of limestone. Any volcanic ash is part of the top layers.

Capri is home to Faraglioni, the 3-rock formation of Stella, Mezzo and Fuori. Legend says were thrown into the ocean by the Cyclops Polyphemus as an attention getter with his father and God of the Sea, Neptune. Capri, located in the Mediterranean Sea, is made of the same rock. Faraglioni is the result of erosion by the tides and waves. The rocks even have an archway that small boats go through. Another legend - kissing your partner under the archway will bring good luck and love.

Getting around Capri is easy with their funky cabs. They’re designed so you can see the sights. Capri has 3 levels; the marina and port level called Marina Grande, Capri with the Pizzetta at its center, and plenty of shopping and restaurants, and Anacapri, the highest village on the island. Capri is the home of Limoncello and at one time was exclusive to the Marianttonia Hotel where it was created.

The rich and famous love Capri. Over the years it’s been a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Princess Grace, as well as Audrey Hepburn who popularized "Capri" pants. Caesar Augustus was so taken by Capri he traded the fertile island of Ischia to the city of Naples for it in 29 BC. Located in the Gulf of Naples and visible from Sorrento, Capri is the right mix of Italy, the Mediterranean, and Culture.

Speaking of Sorrento, if you stay there get a room with a view!! Capri to the left, Vesuvius to the right and a beautiful sunset.
