Blac k Rooster wins Chianti Classico
Chainti Classico Rooster

In Tuscany we learned the Black Rooster is the legal symbol of Chianti Classico wine.  Its origin goes back to the Middle Ages when 2 roosters and 2 knights were used to draw the borders of the region.  The knights were to race and where they met would be the line or border.  The Sienese people used a well fed and pampered white rooster as the alarm clock.  A black rooster was chosen by the Florentines, who kept it in a cramped cage and starved it for a few days.  The hungry black rooster woke first and the knight got off to a head start.  In addition ending the war and drawing the new border between Republic of Florence and Siena, the Chianti Classico region was created.

The photo was taken at the headquarters of Tenuta Torciano Winery, San Gimignano, Italy. The Vinyard owns vineyards in the Chianti Classico area. Chianti wine outside of the 10,000 hectares of planted Classico vines can only be called Chianti and cannot use the Black Rooster logo.
