Updated: Oct 18, 2023

Firenze, or Florence, is the capital of Italy's Tuscany Region. Florence was the birthplace of Italy's Renaissance and is rich in architecture and art. Michelangelo's David was built and still "lives' in Florence.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is in Florence. The Cathedral (Duomo) was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in 1296 but the dome by Filippo Brunelleschi, was completed in 1434. The Medici family was a wealthy banking family and founders of Medici Bank in Florence in 1397. They were patrons of the arts during the Renascence Period in Italy and commissioned not only Brunelleschi but also da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and other artists.

Michelangelo's David was created between 1501 and 1504 and measures 17 ft. The statue was located in the public square, Palazzo della Signora until 1873. After being moved into the Galleria dell 'Accademia the original was replaced by a replica. You can still see both the original and replica today in Florence.

Florence is also know for its leather. Located on the Arno River, Florence throughout history there has always been access to water needed for tanning leather. For hundreds of years Florence has a reputation of the best leather craftmanship, quality leather hides, and their dye making processes in the world.
